The CMU Tech Medical Office Assistant program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to function effectively as Medical Assistants in both clinical and administrative capacities within ambulatory healthcare settings, under the supervision of licensed healthcare providers. Medical Assistants play a crucial role in the healthcare team, performing a diverse range of clinical and administrative tasks.
In the clinical realm, Medical Assistants are responsible for maintaining medical and surgical asepsis, conducting vital sign assessments, assisting physicians during examinations and surgical procedures, administering ECGs, and dispensing medications. They also undertake basic laboratory functions such as specimen collection, and conducting routine tests. On the administrative side, their duties may encompass patient reception, appointment scheduling, record-keeping, filing, bookkeeping, insurance processing, medical transcription, and proficiency in microcomputer applications.
A key attribute of this profession is the opportunity for personal interaction with patients and collaboration with other healthcare professionals. Because the CMU Tech Medical Office Assistant program includes supervised practice in an assigned clinical setting, graduates are prepared for a variety of roles, including medical assistants, medical secretaries, medical laboratory assistants, phlebotomists, scribes, receptionists, medical insurance clerks, and electrocardiogram technicians.
Furthermore, graduates of our program are eligible to sit for the American Medical Technologists (AMT) exam, leading to credentialing as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA). This certification enhances their professional credentials and opens additional career opportunities in the healthcare field.
